Kangaroos snap longest drought in footy after 287-days of humiliation

North Melbourne has broken its 287-day losing streak to leave Hawthorn at breaking point.

The Roos came back from 32 points down to run over the top of the Hawks in a second half landslide.

North Melbourne kicked six straight goals during a run at the end of the third term to snatch a 13.9 (87) to 12.8 (80) victory that went down to the wire.

It was the Roos’ first win under coach David Noble — who tasted his first victory as a senior coach while celebrating his 54th birthday.

After years of misery, the Roos are on the rebound and a list re-build.

Even accepting that the club had to swallow the fact that is was going to have a difficult few years ahead – fans were still up in arms after a winless start to the season.

Finally, they have something to cheer about for the first time since August 1, 2020, when they beat the Crows in Round 9 – 287 days ago.

Since them they had lost 16 straight games – the longest active losing streak in football – before Saturday’s comeback over the Hawks.

The cherry on top of the cake for the Roos was that they were led by some of their best rising stars, including Jy Simpkin (38 disposals), Luke Davies-Uniacke (24) and Cameron Zurhaar (four goals).

It led to incredible scenes of celebration by North Melbourne players and staff both on the ground and in the dressing room.

“This gives this football club a little reset — OK, it’s 1-8, it’s not a premiership, it’s far from it, but you’ve got to start somewhere,” Kangaroos great David King told Fox Footy.

“I just think for David Noble it’s a huge moment. We’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting for his first victory.

“Get the eskies out, it’s one of those days for the Kangaroos. Sit down, build a shared experience, build some camaraderie. they don’t come along often enough these moments. I’m just thrilled for the football club.”

The win has piled pressure on the Hawks and legendary coach Alaslair Clarkson.

The Hawks are suddenly 17th on the ladder with just two wins this year.

It comes as questions continue to be asked about Clarkson’s future while the club is staring down the barrel of a roster clean out and rebuild.
