Post-match, sides also remembered the life of former Giants star Jacinda Barclay with tears flowing but the immediate concern was for Stack, after she was tackled heavily in the dying minutes of the game.

The 34-year-old Gaelic football star had come to Australia to try her hand at AFL after a career that included 11 All-Ireland wins for Cork and a 2016 Ladies Footballer of the Year winner.

“Unfortunately Irish recruit Brid Stack has been taken to hospital following spinal precaution protocols after a collision in a tackle late in the fourth quarter. She’s in the best possible care and we will provide a full update when we have further information,” the Giants said on Twitter.

The Giants have relocated to South Australia for the competition before it begins on January 28 but lost 2.21 (33) to 2.1 (13) when the match was called.

But the scenes were emotional after full-time when the sides came together and formed a circle to remember Barclay, who died in her Perth home in October 2020.

Barclay was an AFLW player, five-time World Cup baseballer and American football player with the outpouring of grief from the Australian sporting community.

It was the first match for the Giants’ AFLW side since the 29-year-old’s death.

The minute of silence was followed by the players consoling each other as the emotions overcame the stars.

“Our number 34 will be with us always,” the Giants posted on Twitter.

The two teams came together for an emotional moment post-match to honour Jacinda Barclay in our first match since her passing.
