Derbyshire produce stunning heist over Yorkshire in rain-reduced T20 game to boost their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals of the Vitality Blast
- Derbyshire were set 105 to win off 10 overs in rain-reduced game in Chesterfield
- Needing 19 off the last over they reach their target with two balls to spare
- Leus du Plooy hit the winning six with rain falling in Chesterfield, Derbyshire
Derbyshire boosted their hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Vitality Blast with a stunning heist to defeat Yorkshire in a rain-reduced game in Chesterfield.
Requiring 19 off the final six Matthew Waite deliveries at Queen’s Park — after they were set a revised chase of 105 in 10 overs — the hosts got home with two balls to spare and six wickets in hand courtesy of Leus du Plooy.
Rain was falling as the big-hitting left-hander crashed the winning six, after Waite leaked a dozen runs from the first three legitimate balls and also bowled a wide. Du Plooy finished unbeaten on 46 as Derbyshire, who reached finals day three years ago, completed the double over a Yorkshire team captained by Harry Brook and missing five players due to England selections.
The result propelled Shan Masood’s side to within a point of the coveted top four places and they retain a game in hand over Yorkshire in fourth.
Earlier, Brook, capped by England earlier this year in Twenty20 cricket, held things together with a 50-ball 77 but his departure triggered a sequence of five wickets for six runs in 11 balls as the visitors were dismissed for 175.
Young Yorkshire seamer Dominic Leech then took three for 13 to gain control for the away side before Du Plooy’s late assault changed the course of the contest.
Northamptonshire went top of the northern section when their match at bottom-placed club Worcestershire was washed out without a ball bowled.
