McGregor appears to mock Billy Joe Saunders for quitting against Canelo

UFC superstar Conor McGregor appeared to mock Billy Joe Saunders after his defeat to Canelo Alvarez in Dallas.

Saunders was pulled out by cornerman Mark Tibbs after the eighth round of his super-middleweight unification bout in Texas.

A brutal uppercut from Alvarez left Saunders with a broken orbital socket which saw him unable to continue and taken to hospital.

The abrupt nature of the stoppage between rounds saw Saunders receive plenty of criticism as he was accused of quitting.

And McGregor appeared to take a shot at Saunders by simply posting a photo on Twitter of a blood-soaked Nate Diaz, who suffered a similar injury in their brutal UFC encounter.

The Irishman appeared to take shots at the boxer via his Twitter page when he tweeted a photo of a blood-soaked Nate Diaz – who had suffered a similar injury.

McGregor inflicted the injury on Diaz in their second bout at UFC 202, but he went on to last five rounds as McGregor claimed victory.

Saunders has come under-fire for the manner of his defeat after he questioned Daniel Dubois following his defeat against Joe Joyce having also suffered a fractured eye socket.

“Fighters get in that ring and we know what’s on the line," Saunders told DAZN last December.

“Every fighter needs to understand and the fans need to understand that. In the past, we’ve seen a lot of tragedies in boxing, deaths in the ring.

“Before I go on one knee I’d like to go out on my back with my pulse stopped.

“Everyone has their own thought process in the ring and what went on in the ring I don’t know. He obviously felt he could not continue.”

Alvarez, meanwhile, has his sights set on Caleb Plant and a bid to unify the division after his latest impressive win.

"I said the fight would develop, but it was not as difficult as I expected and I improve day by day," he said.

"I was winning round by round, I told you my fight would develop six or seven rounds.

"I think I broke his cheek and I knew he wouldn't come out. I told Eddy, 'he's not coming out because I broke his cheek'.
