Lewis Hamilton has been given a backhanded compliment by Williams head of vehicle performance Dave Robson. Hamilton was always tipped for huge success in F1 when he burst onto the scene back in 2007.

But not many would have predicted Hamilton to go on and break all the records he has done in the sport with a historic eighth world championship a real possibility this year.

He’s nearly always got the better of his team-mate in his 15 years in F1, particularly Valtteri Bottas at Mercedes.

The Finnish driver is yet to finish ahead of Hamilton in the Drivers’ Championship with Hamilton winning five consecutive world titles.

Only Nico Rosberg at Mercedes in 2016 and Jenson Button at McLaren in 2011 have managed to finish ahead of Hamilton as team-mates.

Robson was race engineer for Button during his battle with Hamilton at McLaren.

And while Robson praised Hamilton’s undeniable talent, he also admitted that team-mates can find him frustrating.

“He’s an annoying customer to have on the other side of the garage, for sure, but he is a phenomenal talent,” he told GPFans.

Robson hasn’t worked with Hamilton since the British racing superstar left McLaren at the end of 2012.

It’s at Mercedes though where Hamilton’s talents have grown from strength to strength.

Despite his advancing years, Hamilton remains the man to beat in F1 and Robson has been mightily impressed by what his former colleague has achieved.

“What he’s done is a phenomenal achievement, and against some fairly impressive team-mates along the way as well,” Robson said.

“Obviously I’ve not worked with him for quite a few years, but it’s something he’s always had.

“There is that something about him isn’t there, that special quality you can’t really define. That was obvious from when he was just a kid.”

Robson added: “I took him testing at Elvington, going up and down the runway, and he was bored stiff after 10 minutes.

“Whereas most kids, when you took them to Elvington, they were just chuffed to bits to be in an F1 car, even when they were just going up and down the runway.

“[But] He was different right from the beginning, and he just has that talent and that tremendous attitude, so you have to take your hat off to him.”
