Amir Khan had chance meeting with Floyd Mayweather just before boxing retirement

Offbeat news from the world of sport

Amir Khan had a chance meeting with Floyd Mayweather hours before announcing his retirement from boxing.

Khan confirmed on Friday that he was hanging up his gloves following his defeat to Kell Brook earlier this year. On Thursday, the 35-year-old uploaded a video of himself to Instagram with Mayweather, 45, ahead of the American's now-postponed exhibition fight in Dubai that was due to take place on Saturday.

In the clip, a delighted Khan says: "I've just bumped into a champ. What's going on Floyd? What's happening?" Mayweather, equally as chirpy as his British counterpart, replies: "What's going on Amir? We're in Dubai."

"We're in Dubai to do that thing," Khan responds, prompting a smiling Mayweather to add: "Absolutely. Nothing but love."

Mayweather had been due to face Don Moore in an exhibition fight in the UAE this Saturday, but the event was postponed after UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed passed away.

The UAE’s ministry of presidential affairs announced a three-day suspension of work and a 40-day mourning period following the sad news, resulting in the cancellation of the bout. However, it is understood the exhibition will be rescheduled, possibly for next week.

Khan, meanwhile, announced his retirement from the ring on Friday afternoon. "It's time to hang up my gloves," Khan posted on social media. "I feel blessed to have had such an amazing career that has spanned over 27 years."

"I want to say a heartfelt thanks to the incredible teams I have worked with and to my family, friends and fans for the love and support they have shown me," he added.

The former unified light-welterweight world champion finishes his professional career with a 34-6 record. His final bout saw him face Brook in a long-awaited grudge match.

Khan was no match for Special K, with the 36-year-old coming out on top via a sixth-round knockout. Brook, who started his career in 2004, also retired last week.
