A heated press conference was held in Los Angeles on Friday, where the pair also took part in two lengthy and intense face-offs.

Alvarez, who suffered only the second defeat of his professional career in his last fight against Dmitry Bivol in May, led the fighting talk.

‘It’s personal for me,’ he said. ‘And this is the way I am. I don’t pretend to be another person or say things in media or in other places and come here and pretend I didn’t’ say anything or I don’t want to say anything.

‘No. It’s personal for me because he talked a lot of things. That’s why it’s personal. And I just can’t wait to be in that ring.

‘He’s two different people. He pretends to be a nice guy but he’s not, he’s an a**h***. That’s what he is. He pretends to be a nice guy and says “Oh, yes, I’m just looking for the fight, I’m happy”. And then in other places he talks a lot of shit. It is what it is. Just be a man and say what you say.’

Asked if he wants to end Golovkin’s career, Alvarez said: ‘I will do it. For sure. (A knockout) is the only way I want to finish this fight.’

Golovkin gave a wry smile and appeared surprised at the strength of Alvarez’s words and was much more civil in his own assessment of his opponent.

‘I respect him a lot,’ the Kazakhstani said. ‘As for him saying it’s personal, I really don’t understand what he’s talking about because after the second fight, we shake hands.

‘I believe we put everything behind us back then. If he says he has still has something against me, it’s his problem, not mine.’

Golovkin’s defeat to Alvarez four years ago stands as the only loss on his professional record, but he has only had four fights since then.

He most recently beat Japan’s Ryota Murata by knockout in April, adding the WBA (Super) belt to his IBF and IBO titles.
