The temperature in Las Vegas went up a few notches at the weigh-in faceoffs ahead of UFC on ESPN 23 as light heavyweight strikers Ion Cutelaba and Dustin Jacoby skirmished ahead of their main card bout at the UFC Apex.

The fighters had just weighed in ahead of the UFC Fight Night event, which takes place on Saturday night at the UFC Apex, and Moldova’s Cutelaba, who is known as “The Hulk,” and loves to attempt some physical intimidation tactics during faceoffs, tried to impose himself on his American opponent.

Initially, everything looked fine, as Cutelaba entered from stage left and warmly shook the hand of UFC president Dana White, who was on hand to keep order.

But the UFC president wasn’t ready for what followed as Cutelaba stepped forward and grabbed the back of Jacoby’s neck.

It started a brief scuffle between the pair as White, along with the UFC’s security staff, intervened to separate the two fighters.

White had previously criticised UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby for failing to stop a similar scuffle between Jeremy Stephens and Drakkar Klose earlier this month. Stephens’ push hit Klose hard enough to give him a concussion and force the cancellation of their fight.

But White himself found himself caught similarly off-guard, as the two light heavyweight knockout artists threatened to get the fights started a day earlier than expected.

The main event faceoff between light heavyweight contenders Dominick Reyes and Jiri Prochazka was far more composed but no less intense as the pair stared through each other for the final time ahead of fight night on Saturday night.

The co-main event features a featherweight matchup between longtime 145-pound contender Cub Swanson and rising Georgian striker Giga Chikadze.
