A UFC fighter is being investigated after ‘suspicious betting activity’ this past weekend when Darrick Minner was defeated by Shayilan Nuerdanbieke at Saturday’s event in Vegas. Neurdanbieke’s odds of a win were said to have “moved dramatically” just before the fight with many bettors placing money on the Chinese featherweight.
In the first minute of the fight, Minner threw a leg kick before grimacing in pain. He would throw another with the same leg before falling to the ground as Neurdanbieke begun a ground-and-pound attack which was able to end the fight securing a big win.
Some took to social media, stating that it looked to be strange ending to the fight, but it was only until a recent announcement that betting money came in on Neurdanbieke with some now suspecting foul play.
US Integrity, a firm that monitors betting markets, is investigating, according to Sports Illustrated, even though it does not have enforcement power. Therefore, other authorities, betting regulators or the UFC themselves would be the ones to issue a response.
The incident comes just weeks after UFC president Dana White installed a policy that banned UFC fighters and those in their circle from betting on fights.
The UFC released a statement which said: “Like many professional sports organisations, UFC works with an independent betting integrity service to monitor wagering activity on our events.
“Our betting integrity partner, Don Best Sports, a leading global supplier of real-time betting data for North American sporting events, will conduct a thorough review of the facts and report its findings. At this time, we have no reason to believe either of the athletes involved in the bout, or anyone associated with their teams, behaved in an unethical or irresponsible manner.”
The night saw Daniel Rodriguez fight for the second time in less than two months after his win over Li Jingliang, after originally being scheduled to face Kevin Holland before a switch-up at UFC 279. He was defeated by Neil Magny on the night, whilst Amanda Lemos secured a victory over Marina Rodriguez to vault herself up the rankings.
This weekend will see the UFC return with a PPV event in New York City as Israel Adesanya faces old foe Alex Pereira – the only man to ever knock him out back in his kickboxing days. Elsewhere on the card, Carla Esparza will defend her title against Zhang Weili, Dustin Poirier will face Michael Chandler and Liverpool’s Molly McCann will get her PPV debut against Erin Blanchfield.
