UFC boss Dana White pocketed a sizeable profit after successfully betting on Canelo Alvarez’s knockout win over Caleb Plant.

White had placed a $100,000 (around £74,000) bet on the Mexican before his bout to crown the undisputed super-middleweight champion of the world in Las Vegas.

Canelo to win by knock-out was an odds-on bet, but White still came out with a profit of more than $40,000 as a result of his staking such a large sum.

The 31-year-old was putting his WBC, WBA and WBO belts on the line against IBF champion Plant, and after controlling the fight struck a number of crushing blows to send the American to the canvas in the 11th round.

The Mexican is the first-ever undisputed super-middleweight champion in history and took home at least £30m for his efforts.

His win also made UFC president White richer, with the 52-year-old seen watching Canelo’s fight from the front row of UFC 268.

UFC 268 was headlined by Kamaru Usman defeat Colby Covington on a stacked card, but White was more interested in watching Canelo secure him the win.

“I like Canelo. I bet on Canelo – that’s why I watched the fight,” White said. “I bet $100,000 on him to win by knock-out."

When asked if he paid for the fight he grinned and said: “Uh… yes.”

White, who has a net worth of approximately £370m, once bet $1m (£741k) on a boxing bout in 2007 only to lose.

“On my god. What was the kid’s name? Jermain Taylor,” White told ESPN.

“And who did he fight? I know this for the ass-whooping I took. He fought the tall, lanky, white kid from Ohio, Kelly Pavlik.

“I bet $1million on Taylor and he got destroyed.

“It was the first time I ever bet $1m dollars because I was so confident Taylor was going to win that fight.”

White believes betting makes whatever event or sport he is watching ‘a lot more fun’, so he enjoys it.

However, White admits that he perhaps bets too much: “I play table games too much. I’m a degenerate if you’re not getting it. I’m a degenerate, yes. I love to gamble."

At UFC 268, there were also wins for Rose Namajunas, Marlon Vera, Shane Burgos and Justin Gaethje.

It was during Namajunas' triumph over Weili Zhang in the chief-support bout that White could be seen watching Canelo vs Plant on a monitor at ringside.
