UFC champion forced to leg it out of arena as angry fans hurl bottles at fighter

Champion Brandon Moreno was forced to run from the arena after reclaiming the unified flyweight title at UFC 283.

Fighting in the co-main event in Rio de Janeiro, Moreno took on home favourite Deiveson Figueiredo for the fourth time. He was two rounds to one ahead on the scorecards when the doctor refused to allow Figueiredo to come out for the fourth.

The Brazilian was suffering with a badly swollen eye, with many suggesting it had come from an illegal eye poke, though was later proved to be legitimate. But home fans were left fuming as their fighter was deemed the loser.

After celebrating his victory in the octagon, Moreno was speaking to UFC commentator Daniel Cormier as boos rained down.

And as Moreno left the cage, it appeared to be booze that was raining down on him as fans appeared to hurl bottles in his direction while he fled.

The champion was forced to run while being shielded by security members as items were launched at the fighter, who now has 21 wins from 29 professional bouts.

Moreno said: "I think that [alleged eye poke] is why people were very angry at the end. But I saw the replay actually, he kicked me, I punched his leg and threw a hook. It was clean at his right eye.

"I pushed his face with my hand but my hand was up. Maybe that's why people were a little bit mad with me, but what can I say.

"It was funny. Even I wasn't expecting that, but think in the end people will be very happy with my performance.

"I was just trying to enjoy the moment. It was crazy how all the bodyguards were around me, pushing me. I threw the belt to the floor and was like 'leave it there'.

"I started to run with my training partner at the end. But it was funny."
