Darren Till was submitted by fast-rising South African contender Dricus du Plessis in the third round of their UFC 282 bout. The loss extends Till’s skid to three on the bounce with only one win coming in his last six.

Despite finding his feet in the second round with a masterful striking display, Till was comfortably out-hustled in the grappling department throughout. In the third and final round, du Plessis locked in a face crank to halt proceedings as Till hung his head in shame.

After the defeat, Till – heartbroken by the result – posted a video to Instagram in which he admitted he needs some time off to ‘rethink stuff’ but assured fans he wouldn’t be retiring.

“What’s happening everyone? You don’t always get what you want in this life, it’s tough,” said Till. “I’m 29 now, I’ve been at the top of the sport since 2017, and I entered in the UFC in 2015. I’m doing this video now because I feel like it’s the right time.

“I’m not retiring, this is not a retirement speech. I’m 29, that would be stupid to retire. But I’m on a bit of a losing skid at the moment, I’m not finding my right ways and stuff like that.

“It’s crazy because when I’m in the gym and I’m sparring with the best guys in the world, I’m in my element and when I step into the Octagon, I can’t seem to put things together.

“I have moments like in the second round where I’m untouchable but then certain things happen. I just want to say whether you love me or hate me, I really am sorry. I tried to put a show on, I never cut corners. I do really train, maybe I train too much, I train like a f****ing man demented.

“The past 13 months I’ve given my all and I’ve always give my all to this sport. Now, I don’t know what to do properly but I think I need some time off the UFC and just rethink stuff. I’m not retiring, I want to fight soon, next year. But I just want to spend Christmas with my family and my friends who support me.”
