McGregor’s instant reaction to Justin Gaethje’s brutal KO could set up fight
Conor McGregor says that his comeback fight with Michael Chandler will be announced during this season of TUF
Conor McGregor was quick to call out Justin Gaethje after a spectacular knock out Dustin Poirier grabbed everyone’s attention at UFC 291. Gaethje needed less than two rounds to dispatch former interim lightweight champion Pourier in Utah on Saturday night.
Gaethje’s devastating head kick was enough to avenge his 2018 defeat to Pourier and in the process win the symbolic BMF title, which stands for ‘baddest motherf****r’. Once the fight had concluded, ‘The Notorious One’ took to Twitter and called out the new BMF champion.
“Justin, I’ll slap you around”, the Irishman tweeted, before adding soon after: “I’m the real bmf, he can fight for pennies if he wants but I want spirits, I call the shots, I’m in it to launch shots, f*** Chandler, you want it call for it.”
McGregor is due to fight Michael Chander later this year but it has yet to be confirmed and now his latest tweet may have thrown their bout in further doubt. Chandler tweeted his congratulations to Gaethje after his impressive victory before taking aim at the former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion.
“Just pee in the cup @TheNotoriousMMA it ain’t that complicated,” he said in reference to McGregor needing to produce two negative drug tests before he can fight again. Post-fight Gaethje claimed he ‘does not care’ about a potential fight with McGregor and in fact, has his sights set on a lightweight title bout.
“I think he’s turned me down six times,” Gaethje joked when asked about the tweet. “So usually you have to lose to fight him so I don’t know what’s going on… I don’t know, you know I don’t really care, I really don’t care.
“Whatever, I fight MMA, I like to fight big fights and I like exciting things, it sounds pretty exciting to me.” He then commented on McGregor who still hasn’t re-entered the testing pool since being out of action after suffering a broken leg against Pourier in 2021.

“The Notorious One” has never failed a drug test and Gaethje insisted he would never compete with anyone who has taken banned substances. “I’m not going to fight someone on steroids,” he continued. “I’ve never taken steroids in my life, never will – well maybe when I’m retired I might.
“But I’ve never taken steroids and I don’t want to fight someone that is cheating so I probably shouldn’t even say that if I want the fight but it’s the truth.” In his next bout, Gaethje is likely to face the winner of October’s lightweight title contest between Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira.
