Conor McGregor has launched a cheeky dig in the direction of his old rival Floyd Mayweather ahead of the undefeated American’s upcoming 44th birthday. The pair faced each other in 2017 when McGregor made his professional boxing debut against the 50-0 former welterweight champion, with the UFC icon eventually losing out in the tenth round after a mostly one-sided affair in favour of his opponent.

McGregor and Mayweather have a long and storied history of bad blood, with both fighters trading a number of pre- and post-fight jibes with each other over the last few years.

The Irishman has since added more fuel to the fire with a thinly-veiled mocking of his opposite number, posted in written form to Instagram on Friday.

A sarcastic birthday post five days in advance of Mayweather’s big day contains a clear reference to the boxing champion’s omission from the Forbes list of the ten highest-paid athletes during 2020.

“Happy birthday Floyd! We miss you on the Forbes,” McGregor wrote alongside an image of the pair facing off prior to their highly-anticipated fight three years ago.

Mayweather has not returned to the ring in an official capacity since his win over ‘The Notorious’ and has consequently seen himself drop off of the coveted Forbes list.

Tennis icon Roger Federer was named as the highest-paid professional athlete last year, taking home an estimated £106.3million, with the Swiss star accompanied by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and LeBron James in the top ten.

McGregor himself was placed at number 16 while Mayweather failed to even make the top 100, undoubtedly as a result of his recent inactivity.

Despite the American’s absence, he is still understood to retain a healthy personal fortune well above the £400m mark.

He earned a whopping £175m over the course of the McGregor fight alone.

Meanwhile, the Dublin-born UFC star previously announced his intentions to return to the list’s top ten, with his next move currently up in the air after last month’s loss at the hands of Dustin Poirier in Abu Dhabi.

“I’m already a very wealthy man and it is only going to go up, make no mistake about it,” he said recently. “This year I have aspirations of being the number one highest-paid athlete on the Forbes list.”

Talk of a future rematch between McGregor and Mayweather has gained traction in recent months, with The Sun claiming in January that the two parties were in talks over an unprecedented £1billion fight to take place in the near future.

However, it remains to be seen whether negotiations have been dashed by the Irishman’s defeat to Poirier at UFC 257.

He was widely expected to pick up another career victory in his first outing for a year, but was sensationally beaten by ‘The Diamond’ in emphatic fashion.

Poirier broke McGregor down during the first round with a number of brutal leg kicks before finishing the bout midway through the second with a flurry of unanswered punches.

The two-time UFC champion has since been vocal in his wishes for redemption in a third and final fight against Poirier, which is likely to come ahead of any potential rematch with Mayweather.
