Wimbledon star Jamie Murray relieved as Brit wins two matches in one day

Jamie Murray was happy to get through two matches in one day as the Brit advanced in both his men’s and mixed doubles matches. He partnered Michael Venus on Sunday morning to win in three sets before Murray and Taylor Townsend got the job done in mixed after a marathon 15-13 tiebreak.

With all of Britain’s singles players crashing out of Wimbledon in the first week, it’s up to the doubles players to keep the flag flying. And Murray carried the torch on Sunday as he and Venus won their second-round match 6-7(5) 7-6(3) 6-3.

There were more tiebreaks for the doubles world No 33 as he and Townsend came through 7-6(2) 7-6(13) in their opening mixed doubles match. Speaking after his double win, Murray was glad that he kept it to five sets for the day instead of six.

“Long day. Successful in the end, yeah,” he said. “I didn’t really want to be playing a third set there but we did well to get through. We did really well in the men’s match this morning and then the mixed was a battle.

“Played five sets and four tiebreaks so happy to get through and I think tomorrow we’ll play mixed, we won’t play men’s tomorrow, still waiting for people to win and stuff. But happy days, yeah.”

In the men’s doubles, Murray and Venus are some of the only players who are already through to the third round after a week of rain delays which have seen matches cancelled while singles players also in the doubles have needed extra rest. Explaining the decision to play twice in one day, he said: “We obviously had to finish the mixed.

“They needed to get through all the first rounds by Sunday because the final is on Thursday so I knew we were going to have to play that. Obviously they didn’t really play that many second-round men’s matches. I think they’re still a little bit behind.

“I think they were a bit unfortunate in a way that quite a lot of sort of mid-ranked, lower-ranked singles players that were in the doubles won through multiple rounds of the singles so they couldn’t get through the first round doubles so there was a bit of a backlog.”

But it might have been a different story for Murray had he lost twice in the same day instead. “Yeah, it’s always nice to win. If you play two matches and lose two in the same day, that’s rough going that,” he smiled.
