Wimbledon fans sent clear message after provoking Novak Djokovic retaliation
Novak Djokovic on the importance of routines.
Wimbledon fans have been told they’ve got Novak Djokovic ‘misunderstood’ after some gave him a negative reception during his second-round victory over Jordan Thompson on Wednesday. The Serbian was seen glaring at some Centre Court fans and cupping his ears in retaliation as he won the match 6-3, 7-6, 7-5.
Djokovic became the most successful men’s player in history last month when he won the French Open to lift his 23rd Grand Slam trophy and move beyond Rafael Nadal’s 22 Majors. Seven of Djokovic’s Grand Slam victories have come at Wimbledon, with the 36-year-old winning the last four editions of the tournament.
In fact, Djokovic is unbeaten at the All England Club since 2017 and has won his last 30 matches there. But over the years at the tournament, he has struggled to acquire the same adulation bestowed upon the likes of his former rivals Roger Federer and Nadal.
During Djokovic’s first-round match against Pedro Cachin on Monday, there was a familiar lack of enthusiasm shown towards the veteran, while the mood was similar throughout his contest with Thompson. Djokovic’s winners were cheered less loudly than those of his first two opponents. And his reaction towards the crowd on Wednesday illustrated his obvious chagrin after all he has achieved on the famous Centre Court throughout his career.

Alex Corretja has recently attempted to elucidate exactly why the player doesn’t get the love he deserves. And the former world No 2 has claimed people “don’t’ know” the real Djokovic. “People get confused by his way of thinking and it’s a shame because I think he is an unbelievable human being, honestly,” Corretja told Tennis365.
“He is deep, he is someone who is very interesting and you learn so much when he speaks. When you listen to him, he goes into everything to become better both as a tennis player and a human being, as a father and a son. I have so much respect for him and I am a big fan.

“People don’t know Novak and that is why they have an opinion of him that isn’t always positive. What they see from a player is the reactions he shows on court. They have a chance to hear maybe two questions from him on court and that is nothing as they are pretty much based on the match.
“I like him very much, he is an interesting person and he has so much to add to the whole world. He is a humble guy and I think it would be good for him to give some interviews from time to time for people to get to know him better.”
