Wimbledon ditches tradition as championship announces plans for fans return

There will be no traditional Wimbledon Queue at the Championships this year because of social distancing.

But the All England Club is continuing to plan for the “most likely outcome” of a reduced number of spectators being allowed at the grass-court Grand Slam this summer.

Wimbledon was cancelled for the first time since the Second World War last year.

Tickets holders who had tickets in the 2020 ballot will now be offered the same allocation in 2022. But tickets this year will only be sold online in June when numbers have been confirmed – and there will be tickets on sale at the gate or any ticket re-sales.

Tennis fans can usually queue outside – sometimes for days in nearby Wimbledon Park – to buy the limited number of tickets available each day. Wimbledon is scheduled to start on Monday June 28.

Chairman Ian Hewitt said: “These remain challenging and uncertain times, and our thoughts continue to be with all those affected by the pandemic.

"Although the promise of a return to a more normal existence is on the horizon, we are not there yet.

"As such, we have taken some key decisions in order to provide us with some certainty in our planning, and yet also to retain flexibility where we need it the most.”

Wimbledon also confirmed last week’s announcement that all players will have to stay in official bubble hotels – even home-based stars like Andy Murray.

A statement said: “here will be official hotels for all players, their support teams, and key groups such as officials, which will be a mandatory requirement for entry into and participation in this year's Championships.”
