Roger Federer has admitted that Novak Djokovic is “right” to be considered the favourite to Wimbledon this year. Djokovic has been the man to beat in 2021 so far with the Serbian winning both the Australian Open and French Open.
He’s also been dominant at Wimbledon over the past few years having not lost a match at SW19 since 2016.
It was in 2019 where Djokovic and Federer played out a remarkable final for the title with the former coming out on top.
Since then, Djokovic has gone from strength to strength while Federer has struggled with injuries.
Djokovic is now just one Grand Slam title behind the record held by Federer and Rafael Nadal.
JUST IN: Roger Federer may have Cameron Norrie concern ahead of Wimbledon clash
The 39-year-old is still recovering from double knee surgery in 2020 and has played limited matches so far this year.
But he headed into Wimbledon this week with optimism that he could be a contender, particularly after Nadal and Dominic Thiem withdrew.
Federer looked shaky against Adrian Mannarino before being given a walkover after the Frenchman retired.
However, the Swiss tennis icon was in much better form against Richard Gasquet, winning in straight sets to set up a third-round tie against Cameron Norrie.
DON’T MISS
Djokovic is still seen as the favourite though with many people backing the world No 1 to win his sixth Wimbledon title.
Federer cut a bemused look when he was given some statistics on bookies odds for who could be in the men’s final.
The reporter noted that Djokovic against Daniil Medvedev is the most backed final while there is also strong odds on Federer taking on the world No 1.
Federer wasn’t too interested in being bogged down on potential final outcomes.
But the two-time Wimbledon champion does admit that Djokovic deserves his tag as the “favourite”.
“I feel like Zverev also should be higher maybe because I’ve played him on grass before. I know he can play very well on the grass, especially if he’s clocking his serves.
“Medvedev, sorry, he’s No. 2 in the world. It’s normal that he should be up there, as well.
“Then me with my results here, they always have to put me in somewhere.
“But they probably are right about Djokovic making all those finals on the other side, that he’s the favourite.”
