Roger Federer has insisted that although he is not planning on returning to professional tennis any time soon, he could still decide to take part in exhibition events further down the line. The Swiss icon retired after playing in his final tournament at the Laver Cup back in September and seems to be enjoying his time away from the court after bringing an end to his glittering 24-year career.
Federer has been able to spend more time with his family since walking away from the professional game after several injury-hit seasons, but he appears to be toying with the idea of playing in exhibitions if he gets any opportunities over the coming years. He told Aargauer Zeitung that his body feels much better after taking a step back from tennis, but insisted that he would not rule out returning for a one-off event if he manages to stay fit.
“If the body was in top shape, I would probably play a few exhibitions,” said Federer. “I still go to the gym four or five times a week and try to get my body back into shape with my knee. That’s why I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything.
“What goes away is the great stress of being ready on day X. Not having this stress anymore was a great relief. The body is okay, sometimes I have a stiff back, but that can also be from golfing at the weekend! Waking up in the morning is totally okay. I would sign that for the rest of my life.”

Federer went on to reveal that he has been leading a relatively stress-free life since retiring from tennis last year, with the 41-year-old now able to spend a greater amount of quality time with his young children. He also explained that his decision to stop playing was only made after months of careful consideration, while he also made sure to draw up plenty of plans in advance to ease the transition into his post-tennis career.
“I’m a bit more relaxed because I know I have more time,” added Federer. “Logistically it was always a big task, but on the other hand the last few years have been very quiet. In this respect, it is not the case that a completely new life began in September. It was very fluent. I had a lot of things planned before that.

“The time with the children has changed. The girls have grown, have even more school material, the boys are out of baby age. Rather, our lives have changed as a result. The stress of everyday life is gone for me. I can plan more and I realised that I have to, otherwise I always live according to what comes my way instead of asking myself what we want to do and what our needs are.
“I had great trips with my parents and the kids. I gave my parents a trip on the Orient Express for their birthday, and with the children we were in Lesotho. That was great fun. It was fantastic to be there with everyone, including my mother.”
