Emma Raducanu has recalled a conversation with King Charles that left her “laughing” as he queried the tennis star about her career. She met the Royal Family in December when the 20-year-old received her MBE after being named in the New Year’s Honours list for her services to cricket.

She received her award almost a year after being named in the list for her US Open victory in 2021 as a qualifier – the first qualifier in history to win a Grand Slam title. She was invited to Windsor where she was met by King Charles who promptly asked her the same question many supporters had been wondering.

She painted the scene of their meeting in a recent interview with the Sunday Times. “I didn’t want to sit in the dress while driving so I went in my tracksuit, and when we got to Windsor I went into the changing room in Zara and walked out in a Dior gown, at 9am.”

Discussing the moment she met the King, Raducanu added: “He asked me, ‘So, have you found a coach?’ I was like, ‘That’s good banter!’ It was so funny, I was laughing because everyone was ripping me for not having a coach. I was like, ‘The fact you know this, I feel honoured.’”

Raducanu has gone through a string of coaches in a perceived issue that still persists to this day, having parted ways with Sebastian Sachs most recently on good terms after being ruled out until the Autumn having gone under the knife on three occasions on both wrists and her ankle.

She is now searching for her sixth coach in two years and will take her time to mull over options while out of action, having expressed her disappointment at being forced to part ways with Sachs. “I have really enjoyed Seb’s coaching and working with him, it’s unfortunate that circumstances made it unfeasible for both of us to continue right now and we have decided to part ways,” she wrote on Twitter at the time of their split. “I wish Seb all the best moving forwards.”

Raducanu is ruled out of this year’s Wimbledon and unlikely to feature at the US Open, though her team was confident that she would return before the end of the season.

The news will likely be welcomed by King Charles who clearly has a vested interest in her career, after their encounter during her MBE award.

Speaking after her name appeared in the New Year Honour List at the end of last year, Raducanu said: “It makes me immensely proud and grateful to be listed to receive an MBE from Her Majesty the Queen. This year has been full of amazing surprises for me so to end 2021 with this appointment is very special.”
