Ons Jabeur has vowed to learn the lessons of her Wimbledon final defeat as she bids for ‘revenge’ over Iga Swiatek in the US Open final on Sunday. Jabeur, 28, put in a sublime display on Thursday night to hammer Caroline Garcia 6-1 6-3 to reach the final stage of a Slam for the second time in 2022.

The Tunisian star was widely tipped to claim a first major title at SW19, but after starting strongly was beaten in three sets by Kazakhstani player Elena Rybakina. And she’ll have her work cut out again against world No 1 Swiatek, who earlier this year successfully defended her French Open title.

But the Polish player had to come through a much stiffer test in her own semi-final, coming from a set down to defeat Belarusian player Aryna Sabalenka 3-6 6-1 6-4. Afterwards, her defeated opponent broke down to tears having lost in the final four at Flushing Meadows for the second successive year.

Jabeur, 28, has a 2-2 record with Swiatek from their four meetings to date. However, it was her more esteemed opponent who prevailed when the two met in their most recent meeting, the final of the Italian Open in Rome in May.

And world No 5 Jabeur seems under no illusion of the size of the task ahead of her: “She’s playing awesome,” she said, via the Irish Independent. “It’s going to be a tough match. I’m definitely going for my revenge. I love playing on this surface, and I feel like I know exactly what to do against her.”

She’s also vowed to learn from her Wimdlebon defeat, adding: “It feels more real just to be in the finals again. At Wimbledon, I was kind of just living the dream, and I couldn’t believe it. Even after the match, I was just going to do my things and not realising it was an amazing achievement already.

“But now I hope I’m getting used to it. I’m just happy the fact that I backed up the results in Wimbledon and people are not really surprised I’m in the finals.I feel very positive about this one.”

Pledging not to leave herself ruing what might of been come Saturday night, she added: “The most important thing is not to regret, because I’m going to give it all on this one. Even if this one is not going to happen, I’m very sure that another one will come.”
