Novak Djokovic’s coach makes exciting Alcaraz claim with US Open revenge eyed
Novak Djokovic’s coach has insisted matches against Carlos Alcaraz will only get better ahead of the US Open. The pair played out a classic in the Wimbledon final last month and Goran Ivanisevic is excited for their rivalry resuming in New York.
Alcaraz won his first Wimbledon title, beating Djokovic in five sets on Centre Court. It was the second Grand Slam singles title the Spaniard had won following last year’s triumph at Flushing Meadows.
Alcaraz will again be among the strong favourites heading into this year’s tournament. However, Djokovic is aiming to win his 24th career Grand Slam singles title, equalling Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 in the process.
Only three of his 23 major wins have come at the US Open. But Ivanisevic insists he will be as motivated as ever to triumph next month and the Croat reckons the battles with Alcaraz will only increase in quality and intensity.

Tennis fans react to Carlos Alcaraz's Wimbledon win
He told Sportske Novosti: “He is always motivated, a Grand Slam is a Grand Slam. It will be a big fight again.
“It is good that at Wimbledon, but also before in Paris, a rivalry was created between two players who are 16 years apart. Each of their next matches will be even better, crazier and more watched.”
Alcaraz put on a stunning performance to beat Djokovic in SW19 after losing the first set 6-1. Ivanisevic admits he is a big fan of the 20-year-old.
He added: “I keep repeating the same thing, he is a great creature. As a person he is phenomenal, and as a player I won’t even talk, it’s a miracle.

“The energy he brings to the court, the way he plays… He’s always smiling, even when he loses, it’s amazing.”
Speaking on the Wimbledon final itself, 2001 champion Ivanisevic says he was surprised by the result. He says the match was there for Djokovic to take if he was brave enough.
Ivanisevic said: “I’m still a little in shock from that final. He said it all in his speech after the match, some finals he should have lost, so he won them, and some he should have won, so he lost.
“In the end, Novak had a lot of chances that he didn’t take. Alcaraz played braver, more decisively when he needed to, he was better that day and won the match.”
