Novak Djokovic has issued his verdict on the debate surrounding Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune, labelling them both ‘very complete players’. The duo have asserted themselves as two of tennis’ hottest prospects, with both starring at the top of the game in their teenage years.

Djokovic lost to Rune in a shock 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 defeat in the Paris Masters final on Sunday, after initially leading the final set of the match 3-1. Afterwards, the former world No. 1 and 21-time Grand Slam chapion weighed into the Rune-Alcaraz debate, giving his opinion on who is better.

Discussing the two teenage stars, Djokovic said: “They are similar in terms of physicality. I think they are both really fit. They train very hard. They are very dedicated guys. They defend, both of them, extremely well.

“Rune has a better backhand. Alcaraz has a better forehand. But they are both improving on those shots that maybe are not as good as maybe other shot. But they, you know, when I say, you know, is ‘not as good’ meaning it’s not a huge difference.

“I mean, they have great shots. I mean, great forehand from Rune or great backhand from Alcaraz. They are very complete players for 19-year-olds. It’s quite impressive. Also their energy on the court, just wanting, motivating themselves and wanting to do well and staying mentally present, it’s impressive.”

In winning on Sunday, 19-year-old Rune secured his first ever Masters victory and did so against one of the sport’s all time great players. It was no doubt an emotional win for the Dane, and he proceeded to pay tribute to the 21-time Grand slam champion open post-match.

In his victory speech, he said: “You’re one of my favourite players, I’ve watched you since you were a kid. It’s a pleasure to share the court with you. I really enjoyed my time at the tournament here and I can’t wait to be back here next year.”

And Djokovic repaid the kind words back, commenting: “I’m not happy that you beat me, but on the other hand I’m happy for you because I like your personality, you’re a very dedicated guy who loves tennis. You’ve put in a lot of hours of hard work, it’s paying off for you and your future is bright.”
