Ex-tennis player Caroline Wozniacki may have provided Novak Djokovic with a huge psychological boost ahead of Sunday’s Wimbledon final, after revealing how Nick Kyrgios is feeling going into his first Grand Slam final. The Australian told reporters that he only got one hour of sleep on Thursday night, and former world No 1 Wozniacki has revealed just how much the nerves may be getting to Kyrgios.

She was surprised that the 27-year-old was practising on the court next to Djokovic on Saturday, but explained that there may be superstitions involved while she disclosed the chat she had with Kyrgios. “I’m actually surprised they were practising so close to each other,” Wozniacki told the BBC. “Normally now at this point of the tournament you have plenty of practice courts to choose from, but at times I think you have your own court that you use and it becomes like a superstitious thing.

“Nick, I saw him yesterday and he was just like ‘I am so nervous, I can’t believe that I am here I have so much time to think about it I haven’t been able to sleep’, that comes with playing your first Wimbledon finals.

“He has so much time to think because he obviously didn’t play the semi-final against Rafa [Nadal], so it just gave him extra time but at the same time he is feeling more fresh, his body is ready, he has been out there just hitting a little bit in the last three days.

“He will be very nervous out there tomorrow but it will be interesting to see how he is going to handle those nerves, is he going to be blowing up and yelling at his box? Is it going to be ‘I am not going to talk at all’, because he is nervous with his shot selection?

“That’s what I am going to be looking for tomorrow, because when he plays his best, he has actually been beating Novak and he could absolutely [worry Djokovic], but best out of five sets, I think Novak has the edge.”

Kyrgios revealed that he found out he was receiving a walkover to the Wimbledon final while he was sitting down to eat, and that he had mixed emotions about the news. “I found out last night at dinner,” said Kyrgios on Friday. “Honestly my first feeling was a bit of disappointment.

“My energy was so focused on playing him and tactically how I’m going to go out there and play, the emotions of walking out there, all that type of stuff.

“It wouldn’t have been easy for him to do that. I’m sure at the end of the day everyone did want to see us go to war out there. I hope he just gets better. I had a shocking sleep last night. I probably got an hour’s sleep just with everything, like the excitement.”
