The dream reunion of the Big Three plus Andy Murray at the Laver Cup in London this month is shrouded in doubt, but guaranteed is that Nick Kyrgios will be absent.

The Australian is heading home after missing out on his latest Grand Slam chance, exiting in a flurry of frustration and racket smashing.

A previous stalwart of the Laver team competition, Kyrgios has already excused himself. Questions remain over the participation of both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal at the 02 Arena for Team Europe, alongside Novak Djokovic and Murray.

Sportsmail understands that not just Cam Norrie but also Matteo Berrettini have been asked about their availability to supplement the Europeans if needs be.

Although no official comment has been forthcoming, there are persistent reports that Federer’s recovery from knee surgery is behind schedule.

Speculation in Switzerland’s Tages Anzeiger is that there may have been issues with water on the knee. Meanwhile, after his US Open defeat Nadal – whose wife’s pregnancy has not proved straightforward – stated that he was unsure when he would play again.

Federer has also been announced to play the Basel Open in late October, but he has been very sparing with any updates on his fitness.

The Laver Cup, between Europe and Team World, will be played from September 23-25, and potentially the Swiss legend could restrict himself to one brief doubles appearance.

Roger Federer may also miss the competition, with the Swiss star yet to make a return from a knee injury sustained last year

Kyrgios was left bitterly disappointed after losing in five sets to Russia’s Karen Khachanov, who will now meet Norway’s Casper Ruud in the semi-final.

After a four-month road trip he wants to go home, where a hearing is due into allegations of domestic abuse made against him by a former girlfriend. Kyrgios stated that his lawyer has instructed him not to comment on the process.

On the court he has made huge strides this summer, with perhaps the biggest of all overcoming the fear of losing while absolutely giving it his all.

He made no secret of his crushing disappointment in defeat, and after fighting right to the end against the strapping Russian let himself down again by smashing two rackets prior to leaving the court.

‘I honestly feel like s**t,’ said Kyrgios, whose next scheduled event is Tokyo early next month.’ I feel like I’ve let so many people down.

‘ I feel like these four tournaments (the Slams) are the only ones that ever are going to matter. It’s just like you got to start it all again. I have to wait till Australian Open. It’s just devastating, heartbreaking. Not just for me, but for everyone that I know wants me to win.’
