Murray jokes Andreeva needs her ‘eyes fixed’ after ‘beautiful’ comment

Andy Murray discusses Battle of the Brits competition in 2022

Andy Murray sparked a frenzy among his fans with a self-deprecating joke on social media after teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva called him ‘beautiful’. The pair’s fortunes have contrasted at the Madrid Open, with Murray crashing out at the first hurdle and Andreeva taking several big scalps en route to the Round of 16.

Andreeva, who started the tournament at 15 years old, received a wildcard into the main draw of the Madrid Open and began in spectacular fashion, beating former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez in straight sets.

Things only progressed from there as the Russian, who only turned 16 on Saturday, beat two top-20-ranked opponents in Beatriz Haddad Maia and Magda Linette to set up a mouthwatering showdown with Aryna Sabalenka in the next round.

As one of the hot topics of the tournament, Andreeva was asked about her experience so far in Spain, which sparked a compliment towards three-time Grand Slam champion Murray.

“It’s just the atmosphere here is so special,” she said. “When you are here and you take lunch with all these stars… You see Andy Murray and you see his face, he’s so beautiful in real life. He is so amazing. The atmosphere to be here amongst all these players is just incredible.”

Murray picked up on the interview when a video was posted to social media, responding: “Imagine how good she’s going to be when she gets her eyes fixed [laughing emoji].”

Former Wimbledon quarter-finalist Mardy Fish also got in on the joke, responding to Murray’s comment with: “How much did you pay her for this? She probably needs a 10-99.”

While the Scot has found time for light-hearted entertainment away from the court, his exploits on it in Madrid certainly didn’t give him much to celebrate as he crashed out in the first round thanks to a straight-sets defeat against Andrea Vavassori.

Afterwards, Murray gave fans an insight into his plans for the rest of the clay-court season.

“Certainly the beginning of the clay season hasn’t been that easy for me, but normally after a few weeks, I start to feel better and play better,” he said. “Obviously last year, I’m not saying I came here and played unbelievable tennis straightaway, but I was playing well enough to win matches… against good players, top players.

“Whilst I feel fit and healthy, I would like to give [the French Open] a go. But I also have ambitions of competing for Wimbledon titles and that sort of stuff and, I know that sitting here today that probably doesn’t sound realistic, but I do believe that that’s a possibility.”
