Swedish tennis star Mikael Ymer was disqualified in the round of 16 against Arthur Fils after reacting angrily to the umpire and smashing his racket on the official’s chair. Fils was awarded a walkover as he led 6-5 after Ymer repeatedly attacked the umpire’s chair with his racket before throwing it away.
Ymer got into an argument with Portuguese umpire Rogerio Santos after claiming the ball was out, then launched an angry tirade when Santos said he was not going to check the mark as it was too late after he missed. The 24-year-old returned to play but after he was broken by Fils and the Frenchman celebrated, Ymer took his frustrations out on the umpire’s seat, slamming his racket against the chair several times until all that was left was the handle.
He flung the remaining part of his racket into the air before taking his seat as his punishment was determined. After the default was confirmed, Ymer shook hands with his opponent before leaving the court and his tournament came to an end.
Ymer was initially unhappy with the official because he refused to inspect the ball mark, he also declined to show the world No 51 the mark where he said the ball hit the line. Richard Gasquet was able to request a mark inspection in his first-round match against Ymer, something the Swede noted, but later erupted after being broken.

Last year, Alexander Zverev was kicked out of the Mexican Open for a similar incident after he repeatedly hit the umpire’s chair with his racket after he and Marcelo Melo lost their doubles match.
The German was handed a suspended ban of eight weeks at ATP tournaments and a suspended £19,000 fine, as Ymer can also expect a hefty punishment.
American Taylor Fritz said that while he is not defending the outburst, officials all too often mistakenly judge a bad bounce for a ball off the line. “Not justifying the reaction at all but the amount of people that think a bad bounce = line hit is insane… crazy bounces happen all over the court and especially near lines,” he wrote on Twitter.
