Fury as Chris Eubank Jr vs Liam Smith called off despite fans ‘booking hotels’

Boxing fans have been left fuming after Liam Smith’s rematch with Chris Eubank Jr was postponed yet again.

Liverpudlian fighter Smith won the pair’s grudge match back in January with a stoppage in the first minute of the fourth round. The two rivals agreed to battle it out again on June 17, before it was pushed back due to Smith sustaining an injury.

And despite a new date being agreed for July 1, the 34-year-old on Wednesday pulled out a second time following his latest medical assessment.

“I’m gutted and sorry to all the fans about the postponement,” Smith said. “I’ve always said a fully fit Liam Smith beats Chris Eubank Jr every time.

“I tried training through because I was desperate not to let anyone down but I’ve had to withdraw from the bout in July following the latest medical assessment this week.

“I’ll heal up now and then be fully fit for later in the summer.”

Promotional company Boxxer said the existing card will go ahead, with Savannah Marshall now headlining the event at the AO Arena in Manchester against world super-middleweight champion Franchon Crews-Dezurn.

But fans were still left fuming as they took to social media to vent their anger at yet another cancellation.

One Twitter user wrote: “Why is it most of the big fights that are scheduled these days get rescheduled or cancelled? Embarrassing.”

Another tweeted: “Boxing really has gone .. how many times do we see boxers avoid each other, cancel shows etc.”

A third added: “This is an absolute joke now. It better not be pushed back too far.

And a fourth fumed: “Boxxer trying to make Marshall the main event after cancelling Smith Eubank is nothing short of embarrassing. I’ll take the refund thanks after 2 cancelled hotels later."

In a statement explaining the decision and outlining how it would compensate fans, Boxxer said: "All tickets remain valid for July 1 at AO Arena, which airs live and exclusively in the UK and Ireland on Sky Sports, with full refunds available for fans who cannot attend

"Boxxer now arranges free food and beverage voucher for every fight fan at Manchester’s AO Arena on July 1st + priority access and discount for rescheduled Smith vs Eubank II event."boxxe
