Jannik Sinner made unusual request to his coach after winning Canadian Open

Chinese tennis star Wu Yibing on his journey to ATP Tour

Canadian Open champion Jannik Sinner insisted that his coach Darren Cahill give him golf lessons after claiming a straight sets victory over Alex De Minaur in Toronto during Sunday’s final. Sinner cruised to his first ATP Masters 1000 final win as he defeated the Australian 6-4, 6-1, but seemingly has his eyes on another sport.

Cahill went full-time with Sinner’s team last year after the 21-year-old split with longtime coach Riccardo Piatti and is hoping that success in Canada can help propel Sinner to Grand Slam glory, with their next opportunity at the US Open.

The Italian reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon and his recent Canadian Open victory will hope to be an achievement he can build upon, after requesting golf lessons from his coach.

“Thanks to my team, thanks again to you who spend every day with me,” Sinner said after lifting the trophy. “And now, Darren, you have to put in a little bit of effort to teach me golf. Tomorrow we play golf.

“This is a title that means a lot, it is a great result that I am happy to share with the whole team. We are working hard and these results make us even more hungry and willing to work and win.

“Before coming here we made a very important call, almost an off-season and we saw how well I recovered from the match with [Gael] Monfils and also with [Tommy] Paul.

“I’m happy with how I approached this tournament, I felt the pressure but I think I managed it very well, point by point until the end. This tournament will remain forever in my heart.”

Sinner has been full of praise for Cahill after a year working together, insisting that he is one of the “best coaches in the world” having previously worked with the likes of Lleyton Hewitt, Andre Agassi and Andy Murray.

“The relationship is going very well,” Sinner said after the quarter-final win over Monfils. “Obviously, one of the best coaches in the world. You know, he has showed that with all different kind of players, men and women, different age of the player. And it’s, obviously, nice to have him with my team. I feel like the combination with him and Simone is going very well.

“I asked him today to push me a little bit more because the crowd was not against me, but they were a little bit more to Gael’s side. So you have to stick with the closest members, no? which is, obviously, your team. And he has shown me many, many things. Now it’s late because — I don’t want to talk too much, but it’s very, very important.”
