Federer, Nadal and Djokovic snubbed by Taylor Fritz when building dream player
Tennis fans react to Carlos Alcaraz's Wimbledon win
Taylor Fritz decided to overlook the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and newly-crowned Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz when building his perfect ATP tennis player. Fritz only reached the second round at the All England Club this year, with the American hopeful being knocked out by Mikael Ymer despite winning the first two sets against his Swedish opponent.
Fritz chose to take part in a Twitter discussion this week by replying to a post inviting fans to choose different elements from several big-name stars to create the ideal tennis player in varying categories. Each option had five possible players to choose from, with their values ranging from $5 to $1, while participants had a maximum budget of $18 to select those with the best serve, forehand, backhand, net play, and movement.
A large number of fans began to respond with their selections and were soon joined by Fritz, who surprisingly decided to leave out Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Alcaraz while constructing his perfect player. He instead chose to give his hypothetical tennis star the serving ability of John Isner, the forehand of Andrey Rublev, the backhand of Alexander Zverev, the net game of British star Dan Evans and the on-court movement of French veteran Gael Monfils.
Fritz wrote: “Give me John serve, Rublev forehand, Zverev backhand, Evans net game, Monfils movement and it’s OVER … anyone who disagrees is just wrong.”

Some fans responded to Fritz’s picks by calling him out for not including the likes of Djokovic and Alcaraz in his selection, with @dianerguy asking: “Where is the GOAT?… Djokovic in nearly every category.” Her view was echoed by @plutotennis, who added: “Not taking Djokovic backhand is absolutely criminal.”
@zork_necro also questioned why Fritz had decided to overlook Djokovic, posting: “Very weird not choosing Djokovic’s backhand and after watching the Wimbledon final it’s hard to pick anyone from the backhand side really. That shot of his is a world’s wonder really.”

Some fans were quick to jump to the defence of the other leading players missed by Fritz, with @Dorli_WI replying: “If you do not take the best forehand in tennis, Rafa’s, is totally wrong.” @chrisknickss, meanwhile, accused Fritz of being jealous of Alcaraz by saying: “Picking anybody’s movement over Carlito in that lineup is just envious of the player and needs to be studied immediately.”
Fritz later clarified that he would be open to making some changes to his selection in order to accommodate Alcaraz, while he also suggested he would consider swapping Evans’ net play for that of David Ferrer, which would allow him to include the forehand of Matteo Berrettini instead of Rublev.
“The only alternative I’ll accept is going Ferrer for 1$ to take Berrettini forehand and Alcaraz movement,” he added.
