Emma Raducanu defeated Shelby Rogers to advance to the quarter-finals of the US Open. The Brit battled through a slow start to outclass her American opponent in straight sets 6-2 6-0.

Raducanu’s energy, shot selection and composure helped overwhelm Rogers to ensure the 18-year-old’s magical run at Flushing Meadows continues.

An double fault gave Rogers an early break point opportunity, but a quick serve and backhand ensured Raducanu took the opening game to deuce.

A fine forehand by Rogers earned another break point, but the American overhit a forehand while the Brit did the same on the next point – and she held on to save a third break point.

However, a pair of unforced errors from Raducanu condemned her to defeat in the opening game with Rogers getting an early break.

Rogers, who needed a tie break to win the decisive third set and earn a shock win over world number one Ashleigh Barty, was then placed on the backfoot due to the aggressive play from Raducanu, who took the game to deuce.

The American held on to lead the first set 2-0, but Raducanu saved two break points to hold her nerve and win the third game.

Raducanu – who has become the youngest British woman to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final since Sue Barker in 1975 – then showed off her hustle and ability to stay in rallies during Rogers’ service game, and was rewarded with a tremendous break – which she celebrated with a loud scream and a fist pump.

Her serve then proved to be too strong for her opponent, completing her first set comeback to lead 3-2.

Rogers then overhit several shots to give Raducanu three break points – and the 18-year-old got the break at the third time of asking when Rogers smashed a backhand into the net.

The American had hit twice as many unforced errors as winners through the first six games of the set, and Raducanu continued her dominance to lead 5-2.

The big serving Rogers was clearly struggling to find her range and once again struggled with errors as she hit shots out of bounds and into the net, and Raducanu took the first set in style.

The teenager held her serve to start the second set on the front foot, with Rogers certainly starting to allow nerves to creep in as she began to snatch at her shots.

Raducanu then broke her opponent instantly to take control of the second set, and she recovered from love-30 down to hold serve and lead 3-0 in the second set.

Rogers then fell apart, dropping two successive games – and scoring a single point across them – before serving to stay alive after Raducanu won her 11th straight game of the match.

Rogers survived her service game, playing some fine tennis as she approached the net, and she earned a pair of break points before Raducanu stormed back to take it to deuce.

The Brit made her Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon when she reached the fourth round – and she then booked her place in the quarter-finals at the Flushing Meadows tournament with an emphatic after flirting between match point, break point and deuce.

It was a statement win for the young Brit as she dropped just three games throughout.
