Djokovic sparks injury fears after surgery as he’s seen with strapping

A video of Novak Djokovic practising ahead of the Monte Carlo Masters has sparked fears among his fans that his elbow is causing him issues. The Serbian was caught wearing a strap around his right arm as he trained, following surgery on an injury in that department previously.

Djokovic will take on Lorenzo Musetti in the round of 16 of the competition on Thursday, following his victory against Ivan Gakhov earlier this week. The Serbian was made to work hard in his first match back on the court since February, winning 7-6 (5) 6-2.

However, there is speculation building that Djokovic may be battling his own injury problems ahead of the match. The 35-year-old had surgery on his elbow in 2018 and Serbian outlet Alo claim fans are worrying he may have an issue in the same area again after seeing the footage.

Elbow issues have troubled Djokovic throughout his career, though the matter appeared to have been dealt with after he underwent surgery when his 2017 campaign was cut short due to the issue.

A video shared on Twitter showed the 22-time Grand Slam champion practising on the court with a black support around his elbow. Djokovic did not look to be having any issues when serving or returning shots, though it has prompted a whirlwind of speculation with one fan writing: “I hope his arm is OK.”

The Serb admitted after he had surgery on his elbow that he felt ‘guilty’ for not going under the knife sooner, telling the Telegraph: “I just cried for two or three days. I cried after I had the surgery on my elbow. Every time I thought about what I did, I felt like I had failed myself.”

“I was trying to avoid getting on that table because I am not a fan of surgeries or medications. I am just trying to be as natural as possible, and I believe that our bodies are self-healing mechanisms. I don’t ever want to get myself in the situation where I have to have another surgery.

“But I think it was a call that I had to make. I was not ready to take another six months or 12 months or whatever. I needed to get back on the court and that was the compromise. At the time I was filled with mixed emotions. I was doubting. I was also being a bit afraid of whether I am going to recover at the fullest. Because you never know how your body will react to very aggressive medical treatment.”

Djokovic is hoping to go all the way in Monte Carlo, having arrived as the top seed and not lifting the title since 2015. Prior to his success on Tuesday, he had only won once in the competition since 2019 too.
