Man Utd missed out on free Martial upgrade in Thuram and now regret it massively

'Man Utd will take pride in that performance' | Man Utd earned a 0-0 draw against Liverpool

Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram is tearing up Serie A, just a few months after joining the Italian club on a free transfer from Borussia Monchengladbach. The French forward was extensively linked with a move to Manchester United but a switch to the Red Devils failed to materialise despite Thuram being available for nothing.

The 26-year-old has scored seven goals in 16 league games for Inter, in addition to his nine assists, spearheading Inter’s climb to the top of the table. He has been in inspiring form as a capable partner to Lautaro Martinez under Simone Inzaghi and Inter will be patting themselves on the back for their masterstroke of a signing.

Meanwhile, United spent £72million on Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta and he is yet to score a goal in the Premier League. The Danish striker is a project forward and has shown plenty of promise, but he could have been backed up by Thuram to ease the burden on the 20-year-old rather than Anthony Martial.

United are not going to pick up the option for a further year on Martial’s contract and he is set to leave Old Trafford in the summer, unless the club can find a team willing to pay a fee for him in January. However, it has been another season where the head coach has been unable to rely on the former Monaco man.

Martial has made five league starts and a further eight appearances off the bench but has scored just once, away to Everton, doing little to address United’s scoring slump. Only five teams in the division have scored fewer goals than Erik ten Hag’s outfit, the bottom four and Crystal Palace.

Meanwhile, Thuram is lighting up Serie A and would have not cost United a single penny in terms of a transfer fee, and his wage demands likely would have been less than what Martial is currently earning at the club.

Thuram had considerable interest from across Europe in his services, including United and Paris Saint-Germain. The Ligue 1 champions were reportedly keen on pairing him with Kylian Mbappe but Thuram insisted that Inter’s long-term interest in him was a crucial factor in his decision to pick them over PSG and United.

“He knows full well why I didn’t come to Paris,” Thuram told Canal+ when asked why he didn’t join Mbappe in Paris. “I never asked for game time guarantees. I don’t think that exists. If you go to a club, it is to impose yourself, or not.

“No, it was simply a question of feeling. Inter Milan were in for me two years ago and have always seen me as a number nine.” United, and perhaps PSG too, will be left with a feeling of what could have been.
