Djokovic and Alcaraz blow Federer out of the water in Wimbledon’s BBC TV figures

The BBC figures set to be released have seen Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz’s 2023 final soar past the days when Roger Federer was competing to be crowned Wimbledon champion. The Swiss star last made the final in 2019 and has since retired, leaving Djokovic and Alcaraz to take over the mantle.
During Federer’s 2019 final against Djokovic, BBC viewing figures peaked at 9.6million, though The i have claimed that Sunday’s five-set thriller topped at a whopping 11m, engulfing previous finals.
The peak audience only considers viewers watching on BBC One and does not take into account those watching on iPlayer, where 4m more saw the 20-year-old topple Djokovic.
The figure is also substantially up from last year when Djokovic defeated Nick Kyrgios to win his fourth consecutive Wimbledon title, as a peak of 7.5m tuned in for the 2022 showpiece.

Fans clearly were willing to root for a new name on the title in Alcaraz, while on the women’s side the BBC reported that there was a peak audience of 4.5m on BBC One for the women’s final between Marketa Vondrousova and Ons Jabeur. it marked another large increase as the 2022 peak for Elena Rybakina’s win over Jabeur in 2022 was 3.1m.
Kyrgios and Djokovic did have to compete last year with the Austrian Grand Prix, while there was no Formula 1 on for Djokovic and Alcaraz at the same time as Lewis Hamilton and co had a week’s break following the British GP.

Not all of the 11m peak viewers were pleased with the Beeb’s coverage, however, following a huge shake-up from previous years as the retired Sue Barker was replaced by Clare Balding as the face of the programme.
Many tennis fans would have assumed to be met with John McEnroe, who has been a prominent face of the BBC’s coverage of SW19 in recent years. However, the American only made a brief appearance as he instead was a commentator and pundit for ESPN.
A Wimbledon final classic between Federer and Rafa Nadal in 2008, often dubbed as the greatest match in the sport’s history, topped 12.8m – but with an increasing online audience the 2023 total figure still surpasses the iconic clash 15 years ago.
