Daniil Medvedev waves white flag in private Sascha Zverev chat after huge spat

Daniil Medvedev has revealed that he and Alexander Zverev called a truce following a huge row that started in Monte Carlo. The German accused the world No 3 of breaking sportsmanship code during their match and Medvedev lashed out in return, slamming Zverev for his past behaviour. But the former world No 1 said they have since talked about the issue privately and are on civil terms ahead of their Rome Masters clash.

Medvedev and Zverev had a dramatic spat following their recent meeting in Monte Carlo, which was won by the world No 3. In the third set, Medvedev consulted the umpire before running off to use the toilet in the allotted changeover time, as he arrived before time was called meaning it didn’t count as a toilet break.

After the world No 22 lost 3-6 7-5 7-6(5) he lambasted Medvedev for taking what he thought was an “impossible” toilet break and said his opponent was one of the “most unfair players in the world”. It prompted the former US Open champion to hit back at Zverev in a fiery press conference.

They are now set to meet in a match for the first time since their dramatic row after Zverev won a rained-off match against JJ Wolf to advance to the round-of-16. But the third seed in Rome has now revealed that the pair are back on civil terms after having a private chat about their spat.

“Could be exciting,” he told Tennis Channel ahead of their upcoming 15th meeting. “I mean all of our matches are exciting, the last two were crazy. Indian Wells, Monte Carlo – we hadn’t played for a long time. He was injured and actually we didn’t play in 2022 at all I guess, and that’s a little bit crazy because we played like 15 times already.”

Addressing the blows they both traded after their most recent match, Medvedev said: “Talking about Monte Carlo, we talked after this. So I think everything is fine, seems like everything is fine for both of us.”

The 19-time title winner also attributed the argument to their reactions after losing – as Zverev spoke following his defeat to Medvedev while the 27-year-old reacted after he lost to Holger Rune. He added: “You know, I lost a match against Holger when I was speaking about this incident, he lost a match against me.

“It happens. So I think we’re fine.” But Medvedev still wasn’t ruling out some more drama in their Rome meeting. “But it doesn’t mean that if we’re playing tomorrow, there’s not going to be something. You never know. We’re both competitors,” he smiled.
