Dan Evans reacts after making history with Cam Norrie and Jack Draper at Queen's
Dan Evans ensured a slice of Queen’s history was made on Thursday as he became the third Brit to reach the quarter-finals.
Evans followed compatriots Jack Draper and Cam Norrie – who will face each other on Friday – into the last-eight with a solid 6-4 7-6 (9-7) win over France’s Adrian Mannarino.
It’s the first time there are three Britons in the quarter-finals at the Queen’s Club in the Open Era.
And it’s possible there could be four, with Andy Murray taking on Matteo Berrettini next.
The winner will meet Evans in the quarter-finals and he made no secret who he would prefer to face.
‘I sort of want Andy to win. I want him to win, I’d like to play Andy, I think it would be special to play him here,’ said Evans.
‘He’s won here so many times and obviously England play Scotland on Friday [in Euro 2020] as well.
‘Quite good to say that’s being done. I hope he wins but Matteo is a great player as well so that might be match of the tournament in a few hours.’
On his win over Mannarino, Evans added: ‘It felt a high-level match. I’m just pleased to have come through.
‘He’s good on grass, I knew it was going to be a difficult match but I didn’t envisage it being that tight and I obviously didn’t want it that tight.
‘It was a tough match mentally more than anything to try and hold on and hold my nerve at the end as well, I was down I think set point.
‘It’s difficult to play your game, go after it, you want to be safe sometimes and make him miss. I thought I did a good job of playing my game in the end and came up with some good serves when I needed them.’
The last time three Brits were in an ATP Tour QF was in 1996 Nottingham, when Tim Henman, Mark Petchey and Greg Rusedski reached that stage.
