Andy Murray still harbours French Open doubts as he reaffirms Wimbledon belief

Andy Murray has confessed that he is still doubting whether he will compete at the upcoming French Open. The world No 42 suffered a first-round exit in Rome off the back of winning the Aix-en-Provence Challenger title. While he is still uncertain over the rest of his clay schedule, Murray once again shared his belief that he could do well at Wimbledon.

Murray is still debating whether to play the upcoming French Open after going back-and-forth for weeks. The three-time Major champion first debated skipping the clay season altogether after a first-round loss in Monte Carlo but later said he wanted to return to Roland Garros while he still could.

The 35-year-old is now set to hold talks with his team to make a decision in the coming days. But after another early defeat at a clay Masters – this time in Rome – the former French Open finalist explained why he was still having doubts.

“I’ll need to chat to my team about that and see what I do from here,” he told the Guardian after a three-set defeat to Fabio Fognini. “There’s the possibility of playing the tournament next week in France. Whether I’d consider playing the week before the French Open or not, I really don’t know. I’ll need to have a chat with the team and see what the best thing to do is.”

Murray has skipped either the French Open or the entire clay season in recent years over fears of the impact on his body. But the former world No 1 said he had no physical worries this time around and just wanted to prioritise properly.

He explained: “It’s not so much about [physical worries]. I trust that my body will be OK after what I did at the beginning of the year. I played back-to-back five-hour matches and did well physically in those matches. There’s no reason why that should necessarily be any different here.

“It was just more to see where my game is at. It’s just what the right thing is to prioritise at this stage in my career.” Murray then went on to share his belief that he could have a good go at Wimbledon later this year, adding: “I trust my body now but I’m aware that my best chance of having a deep run is more likely to happen at Wimbledon.”

It comes after the two-time champion at SW19 revealed that he thought he could push for another Wimbledon title following his first-round defeat at the Madrid Open. At the time, Murray took a similar stance on the French Open.

“Yeah, look, I would like to play, you know, just purely because, yeah, I don’t know if I’ll get another opportunity to play again. Whilst I feel fit and healthy, I would like to give it a go,” he said of making a return in Paris.

“I also have ambitions of, you know, competing for Wimbledon titles and that sort of stuff, and I know that sitting here today that probably doesn’t sound realistic, but I do believe that that’s a possibility. I obviously want to do the right thing there.”
