Andy Murray pleads with BBC for Wimbledon favour ahead of Ryan Peniston showdown
Andy Murray speaks about pressure, family life and Wimbledon, 10 years after his first title
Andy Murray has begged tournament organisers to get him on court earlier this year at Wimbledon so he can get home in time to put his kids to bed. Novak Djokovic gets Wimbledon 2023 underway first on Centre Court at 1pm on Monday against Argentina’s Pedro Cachin and is expected to be back in the locker room by mid-afternoon.
Murray, meanwhile, must wait to discover when his own first-round match against fellow Brit Ryan Peniston is to be scheduled on Tuesday. The BBC historically preferring the All England Club to parade him for their early-evening audience.
“Usually I get given the late shift so hopefully this year they will put me on a little bit earlier,” he said. “The way the scheduling is done now, all the late matches are ending up being played up on the roof.
“I would like to play slightly earlier in the day if at all possible so I get to see the kids in the evening because usually I am finishing at 9pm, 9.30pm. With the later starts and the big breaks between the matches it’s later finishes a lot of the time.”

It would mean that Sophia, seven, Edie, five, Teddy, three, and Lola, one, could even watch their dad in action – although Murray laughed that they are not that bothered. “They would not mind having a TV on in the background to watch me play but I don’t think they would want to come to watch a whole match,” he said.
Murray was surprised by his four children at the Nottingham Tennis Centre last month when he won the Rothesay Open on Father’s Day. During his winner’s speech, Murray said he wanted to get home to see “my kids before bedtime”.

He was then surprised when wife Kim and all four kids were in the crowd. He said: “Oh my God! I didn’t know they were here. I had no idea they were coming. They came last week to the final at Surbiton and it started raining and they had to go home because it was bedtime.
“They missed the end of the match. [But] They’re all here, thanks guys! I don’t know what else to say.” And after his victory, the 36-year-old went on to add: “After I had kids, I was motivated to keep playing so they could watch me when I was older, but they are not really that interested!
“I thought they might be but they are not. I realise for them, they are more interested in other things. But it was still nice because they have not been to Wimbledon.
“They came to Queen’s when I played doubles there, but they have not been around it at all. They are more interested in when we are going to McDonalds after the match.”
