Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has been left out of Great Britain’s Davis Cup team, as new British No 1 Cameron Norrie looks to lead the way at this year’s event.
Norrie became British top seed this month, after he became the very first Brit to clinch the Indian Wells Masters title in California.
The 26-year-old put in a superb performance to defeat Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili 3-6 6-4 6-1 at Indian Wells to move him up to 14th in the world, becoming the British No 1 for the first time.
Murray however had his week cut short following elimination in round three, after he lost to world No 4 Alexander Zverev from Sweden in straight sets to continue a tough year for the three-time Grand Slam winner.
The Scot’s poor run then continued one week later in Belgium, as he was knocked out of the Antwerp Open in round two by Diego Schwartzman 6-4 7-6, making his exclusion from the Davis Cup team an unsurprising one.

Murray discussed his situation regarding the Great Britain team following his exit from Indian Wells two weeks ago, when he himself admitted that he did not deserve a place in the team.
He said: “I’ve given a lot to the Davis Cup, and sometimes to my own detriment physically. The same thing happened last time I played Davis Cup at the end of 2019.
“I know there was coronavirus, but I was struggling with that really up until September time the following year.
“I also don’t feel right now I would be playing, either. Obviously that would be up to Leon [Smith], but I’m not sure I deserve to play in that team.”

The former world No 1 has a superb record playing in the event, as he played a monumental role in delivering Britain’s first Davis Cup victory in 79 years after winning an impressive 11 points from 12 in 2015.
However team captain Leon Smith has no doubt based his team selection on current form, electing Dan Evans, Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski as Norrie’s fellow teammates.
Speaking about his selection Smith said: “I’m delighted to name our first four players to represent Britain at the upcoming Davis Cup Finals in Austria.
“Every player has had a career-best season and will bring some strong qualities to the team.
The skipper went on to add that a fifth name would be added to the squad in the coming weeks.
He added: “A fifth player will be confirmed in the next few weeks and we are very much looking forward to playing in the Finals again this year, having missed it in 2020.”
The tournament finals will kick-off in exactly one month’s time on November 25, with the event being held across three host cities in Madrid, Turin and Innsbruck.
