Andy Murray hints at French Open plans as Brit has Wimbledon wish

Andy Murray has provided an update on his French Open plans after suffering an early exit in Madrid. The 35-year-old lost to Italian qualifier Andrea Vavassori 6-2 7-6(7) but is still considering playing the clay-court Major. Murray is also already eyeing Wimbledon – where he is a two-time champion and believes he could win another trophy.

Murray suffered his third first-round defeat in a row as he crashed out to the world No 164 in Madrid. It comes after what he called “one of the worst performances of my career” in Monte Carlo, where he lost to Alex de Minaur.

But there were better signs from the world No 54 this time around, as he rallied from a break down in the second set to force a tiebreak and saved four match points before losing on the fifth. And Murray himself appeared in better spirits than he did after the recent Monte Carlo defeat – when he considered skipping the clay season altogether.

“Yeah, it wasn’t great,” he said of his performance against Vavassori. Started to play a bit better towards the end, but, I mean, the start was slow. He played very well at the beginning, and he’s serving huge. You know, big kick serve, and in these conditions, not easy to control that. I certainly struggled with that in the beginning. Then, yeah, obviously second set started to get into it a bit more. Was playing I think a bit better, some positive signs. Some of the errors, you know, are hard to explain.”
