Tottenham’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday has raised a concerning statistic in the early stages of Nuno Espirito Santo’s reign. Spurs were dismantled by Thomas Tuchel’s rampant side, with Thiago Silva, N’golo Kante and Antonio Rudiger all on the scoresheet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It’s now back-to-back defeats for Nuno after the ex-Wolves boss began his reign with three consecutive victories to start the Premier League season.

But Opta revealed a startling stat after Sunday’s derby defeat to Chelsea, which followed on from last weekend’s humbling 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace.

Their stats show that Spurs have lost consecutive Premier League matches by a three goal or more margin for the first time since their opening two games of the 2011-12 campaign. During that season, Tottenham were defeated 3-0 by Manchester United, before being hammered 5-1 by Manchester City.

Spurs’ slump since the return from the international break is a stark contrast to Nuno’s side heading into the fortnight pause perched at the top of the table.

But the same frailties which are not rectified by Nuno’s predecessor Jose Mourinho, and eventually cost him his job, are still present.

They did make a positive start against the Blues, but were blown away once Tuchel’s side moved up a gear in the second half.

But Nuno was left unimpressed by the way Spurs conceded so cheaply after half time.

“A lot of things. A lot of things. Starting from the way we conceded, it’s disappointing the way to concede, through a set piece. Then after that it became really hard, really hard to get back in the game,” assessed Nuno.

“Chelsea is a good team and in possession they created us problems.

“Like you said, very good first half, very good. We competed really well, we played good football, we pressed high so we have the awareness that we have a lot of things we need to improve, but the awareness of the first half must stick with us so we can build on it.”

Mourinho came under fire during his spell at Spurs for what was perceived as a negative brand of football.

However, Nuno has also been accused of having a pragmatic approach.

Spurs started the game positively and penned Chelsea back with an aggressive, front-foot approach – and Nuno was quizzed on if he saw that as the way forward for his side.

“We had to find solutions,” added the Spurs boss.

“Since the beginning this is our focus – to find solutions that can help the players to perform. To find partnerships. We started one way at the beginning of the season because those were the players available to build on.

“The international break came and we had problems. Now, I honestly believe the first half was really good, really good. The energy that we put on the pitch – the attitude, the spirit the players had. So if there’s only one positive today, that was the first half.”
