World’s richest tennis player is wealthy enough to buy Man Utd – and have change

Jessica Pegula is looking to add to her mega net worth at the Indian Wells Masters – which is already enough to buy Manchester United and some.

Pegula, 29, trumps the likes of Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams as the world's richest tennis player. In large part thanks to her dad Terry, who made billions from oil and gas, she's sitting on a fortune of £5.5billion.

That sum is more than the reported bids of £4.5bn and £4bn made by Qatari Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad bin Jaber Al Thani and Britain's richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe for United.

Highly unpopular current owners, the Glazer family, have been umming and ahing over whether to sell the club, with fresh investment to keep them at the helm also a possibility.

And while third seed Pegula could comfortably take the Red Devils off their hands, she's fully focused on winning the third WTA title of her career in California this week.

She's progressed to the round of 16 of the women's singles at Indian Wells, beating Italian lingerie model Camila Giorgi and Russian contender Anastasia Potapova so far.

She faces a tough challenge to make it to the quarter-finals, with Czech world No. 15 and two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova standing in her way later today (March 14).

Pegula and fellow American Coco Gauff were agonisingly defeated 6-4, 4-6, 12-10 in the doubles bracket by Japan's Miyu Kato and Indonesian star Aldila Sutjiadi yesterday.

She maintains a largely private life away from the court, but Gauff gave an insight into what she's like outside of the sport when speaking to Tennis Up To Date this week.

"As a person, Jess is probably one of the best out there, I think, especially where she comes from," said Gauff. "Not that you should, but she could just tell everyone, like, F off.

"She's like one of the nicest people ever. Someone, she's older than me. You know, she deals with all my antics when I try and say certain things. In a way, like, she does, in a way, she's like my on tour older sister in a way."
