World-record penalty shootout in England ends 25-24 after whopping 54 spot-kicks
The world record for the number of spot-kicks taken in a competitive game has been smashed at a non-league game in the northeast of England.
Washington and Bedlington Terriers had a penalty shoot-out on Wednesday night that ended 25-24, with the 54 strikes taken breaking a new record.
Following an exhilarating 3-3 draw in the Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup tie at Ford Football Hub, Sunderland, the game went to penalties with Newcastle United academy player Lucas Gamblin scoring the decisive kick.
It beats the current record of 48 penalties taken, which took place in a Namibian Cup tie in 2005 as KK Palace beat Civics with a 17-16 win.
While the record in England has been smashed too, the score breezing past Old Wulfrunians’ 19-18 win in the shoot-out in a JW Hunt Cup tie last year.
Speaking on Thursday morning via local publication the Chronicle, Terriers manager Andy Ferguson admitted he was gobsmacked with what he saw: “I’ve never seen anything like that, it was crazy.
“What made it worse was the last penalty was taken, we hadn’t even shook hands with the opposition, and the timer went off so the lights went out at the venue. It’s crazy, what would have happened if we’d scored our last penalty?
“All of the penalties were of an excellent standard, we had seven lads playing under the age of 18 and we gave them a good chance. They did really well, they showed no nerves at all. We didn’t even know what the score was by the end of the game.”
