World Cup final LIVE as England’s Lionesses look to create history vs Spain

Football Digest: Wiegman 'greatest England manager' of all time

England can win the Women’s World Cup for the first time ever today when they take on Spain in Sydney, Australia. The Lionesses are the reigning European Women’s Championship champions and are looking to become the first World Cup winners from Europe since Germany in 2007.

Sarina Wiegman’s side are one of the best teams on the planet, ranked fourth in FIFA’s international world rankings, and face a Spain team ranked sixth in what promises to be a thrilling showdown at Stadium Australia. The Lionesses have only ever lost one of 38 matches under Wiegman.

And they will be keen to make sure that does not become two in a final contested by two nations who have never previously gotten to this stage of the tournament before. Spain had not so much even won a knockout match at the World Cup prior to this summer.

England will be captained by Millie Bright with attackers Alessia Russo and Lauren Hemp the main goal threats. The pair have three goals apiece, with Lauren James also on three although after returning from a two-match ban following a red card, she may have to settle for a spot on the bench with Ella Toone starting in the No 10 role instead.
