Wolves stadium Molineux damaged after firefighters rushed to contain blaze
Wolves’ Molineux stadium suffered "considerable damage" after a fire in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The fire started at a bar area of the Sir Jack Hayward Stand and spread to the extent that smoke could be seen emanating from the ground from a fair distance away.
The flames endured for about two hours, starting from 1.40am, with the firefighters sent to the scene to tackle the blaze.
Wolves' Twitter account wrote: "Considerable damage has been caused by a fire in the Billy Wright Stand at Molineux.
"Thank you to the excellent @WestMidsFire for their prompt response and assistance in controlling the blaze."
PA messages alerted people close by and asked them to leave the area as the fire alarm blared.
The fire is not being treated as suspicious, thought to be started by an “electrical appliance.”
Andy Howard, watch manager at Wolverhampton fire station, told The Sun "There's been a fire in the bar area, in the kitchen.
"It was contained to the room of origin but the bar area and part of the workspace were involved in fire. Otherwise, it was just smoke damage to the rest of the floor."
The West Midlands Fire Service tweeted: “At 1.56am this morning we responded to a fire at The Molineux Stadium, Wolverhampton. The first of four fire crews and 20 firefighters arrived two minutes after being mobilised. We contained the fire to a conference suite bar area. It was out by 3.40am.”
Fortunately, Wolves’ Saturday fixture was played down in west London, against Brentford at their Community Stadium.
Bruno Lage's side won 2-1, putting them eighth in the Premier League table and just four points off a top-four place.
The game was halted for almost 20 minutes after an ‘unofficial’ drone was spotted overhead.
While Brentford players Rico Henry and Mathias Jensen were involved in a graphic clash of heads and had to be substituted.
The game had to be stalled for around five minutes as medics ran to the pitch and tended to the pair.
Luckily, neither needed hospital treatment and were seen to by in-house medics.
