Wolves fans hail ‘unreal’ hiring of ex-Spain and Real Madrid manager Lopetegui

Wolves fans are celebrating after they pulled off the coup of appointing former Spain and Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui as their new head coach.

Having been managerless since Bruno Lage was sacked over a month ago, the Midlands club have finally got their man in Lopetegui. The 56-year-old had initially knocked back their advances, but he's now signed on the dotted line – six years after they first targeted him.

He'll take charge after the Premier League has paused for the World Cup later this month. And with his resume also including a Europa League trophy with Sevilla, the Wolves fanbase can't wait for him to get started as they languish in the relegation zone.

One supporter tweeted: "Finally we can feel excited again!" Another echoed: "It took a long time but we've finally got a top class successful European manager in. Can start to look forward to games again now."

One boldly wrote: "You make me laugh, you make me cry, you drive me insane daily…. But my god I love you more than my wife!"

"Yes… we all love to see this. Now he needs proper backing in January," argued one. And another added: "Unreal appointment tbf lads."

Molineux chiefs tried to bring Lopetegui on board in the summer of 2016 after he'd been given the boot by Porto earlier that year. But he instead took charge of his nation, going 20 games unbeaten.

The Spanish Football Federation sacked him on the eve of the 2018 World Cup, though, after learning that he was going to join Real following the tournament. His spell at the Santiago Bernabeu lasted a matter of months, again getting the sack after losing 5-1 in the El Clasico.

He joined Sevilla the following year and guided them to the Europa League trophy in his first season. They parted ways with him in October after a poor start which had seen them lose five of their first eight matches.

Wolves approached him last month but he turned them down, reportedly due to his 92-year-old father's ill-health. But Lopetegui has now performed a U-turn and will take over from interim manager Steve Davis on November 14, subject to a work permit.
