Wimbledon star appreciates ‘thoughtful and important’ dress-code change

Tennis star Victoria Azarenka has praised the 'thoughtful' rule change at Wimbledon that allows women to wear black shorts instead of all-white.

The All England Club confirmed last November they would be relaxing the all-white rules, and in a statement, Sally Bolton said: "I’m pleased to confirm that the Committee of Management has taken the decision to update the white clothing rule at Wimbledon.

"This means that from next year, women and girls competing at The Championships will have the option of wearing coloured undershorts if they choose." The move was to try and "relieve a potential source of anxiety" for players on their period.

And Azarenka is the latest to praise the change: "Yeah, I think it's a thoughtful addition, very thoughtful addition, because there are obvious situations that can be tricky and uncomfortable.

"Yeah, I think that's a pretty appropriate word. It's a very thoughtful addition to the rules.

Azarenka battled through her first-round encounter with the unseeded Yue Yang, winning 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. The Australian has now set up a second-round clash with Nadia Podoroska, who like Yang, had to fight through three qualifying rounds to make the main tournament.

The move to allow the ladies to wear different colours has been met with widespread praise, but others, like world No.6 Ons Jabeur, have voiced their concerns: "There are two things.

"One thing, it’s better definitely not to be paranoid. And the other thing, everybody will know that you have your period.

“So I’m not sure which part of it is good. I think I don’t think I’m going to wear anything. If all the girls will wear it, I think it will make it better. But I think it’s a great thing that Wimbledon is trying to help women feel more comfortable on the court.”
