Wijnaldum ‘gives green light’ to AS Roma transfer as PSG nightmare nears close

Georginio Wijnaldum has reportedly given the green light to AS Roma for a season-long loan deal, ending a nightmare 12-month stint at PSG.

Wijnaldum, 31, headed to the Parc des Princes as Mauricio Pochettino's first major coup of the transfer window last summer, joining the Parisians on a free transfer after running down his deal with Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp had maintained an interest in keeping the Netherlands international on Merseyside but the opportunity to join Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, as well as claiming an inevitable Ligue 1 crown, was understood to be too much for Wijnaldum to turn down.

However, the switch didn't quite pan out for the former Reds midfielder as he was named the 'Ligue 1 Flop Signing of the Year,' managing just 1,993 minutes across all competitions. Now, following a disastrous 12 months in the French capital, Wijnaldum is desperate to seal a loan exit, as he needs minutes under his belt to reclaim a place in Louis van Gaal's squad for the Qatar World Cup.

According to Sky Sports Italy, Wijnaldum has given the go-ahead for a season-long switch to the Stadio Olimpico but an agreement is yet to be finalised between PSG and Roma.

I Giallorossi have no intention of fronting up £180k-a-week for Wijnaldum's PSG wages and Sporting Director Tiago Pinto is haggling to reach an agreement to cover half of his eye-watering salary. Though the Ligue 1 champions are continuing to ask that Roma fund the entirety of his mega-wages. At the moment, the two clubs have reached an impasse.

Roma boss Jose Mourinho has acted swiftly in the transfer market and the Dutch maestro would arrive as his fifth signing of the summer. Zeki Celik joined from fellow Ligue 1 club Lille at the start of the month whilst deals for Nemanja Matic and Mile Svilar, from Manchester United and Benfica respectively, didn't cost the club a single cent in transfer fees.

Argentina international Paulo Dybala also joined the club on a free transfer earlier this week as Roma revealed his capture with a spine-tingling announcement in front of 8,000 supporters outside the Palace of Italian Civilisation.
