Manchester United rose as one to welcome Cristiano Ronaldo back against Newcastle on Saturday. But Jorge Mendes reportedly missed his first goal, despite brokering the return to Old Trafford. It was a good day for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side as they secured a 4-1 victory in style.

Manchester United went into the match looking to clock up a third win from four Premier League matches, having dispatched Leeds and Wolves already.

And while Newcastle put up a fight at Old Trafford, they weren’t able to emerge from the contest with anything to their name.

Somewhat inevitably, Ronaldo was the star of the show.

Roared on by a raucous home support, the Portugal international scored twice on his second debut for the club following his return from Juventus.

However, according to The Athletic, his agent Mendes missed the first goal.

And that’s because he was busy getting himself a cup of tea, though he was spotted talking on the phone at half time.

One spectator remarked that he was ‘probably checking Ronaldo’s goal bonus’, with the 36-year-old now up and running for the campaign.

And it’ll now be fascinating to see how his second stint with the Red Devils pans out.

He’s entering the twilight years of his career at present, with Ronaldo certainly a different player to the one he used to be.

But the fact he scored twice on his debut bodes well for Solskjaer’s side.

Next up for United is FC Young Boys in the Champions League, a tournament they’ve not won since Sir Alex Ferguson’s time at the helm.

And Ronaldo is likely to be involved, despite playing the full 90 minutes against Newcastle.

Reacting to the game, the veteran said: “I didn’t expect to score two goals.

“I expected one but not two. It was an unbelievable moment.

“It is unbelievable. When I started the game I was so nervous, I swear.

“I did not expect that they would sing my name all game. The reception is incredible but I am here to win games and help the team.

“It was an unbelievable moment. I was super nervous and was thinking last night that I wanted to play good and show I was still capable of helping the team.

“This club is unbelievable and I am so proud. I am going to give everything to make them proud of me.

“Everyone knows the football in England is different than in any part of the world and to be honest it is the most special one.

“I arrived here at 18 and they treated me unbelievably and that is why I am back.”

Solskjaer also hailed Ronaldo, admitting he enjoyed the perfect second debut back at the club.

“He said his name was Cristiano, that’s as much as I can say,” Solskjaer said.

“Of course everyone when they come into the team has to introduce themselves. Maybe not everyone knew his name but they do now.

“The atmosphere around the club has been electric. The supporters have really enjoyed the last 10 days or so since he signed.

“There were loads of expectations on the team and him and he’s delivered.

“He does what he does. He lifts everyone and gets everyone around the place so focused.

“He puts demands on himself which then will put demands on his teammates and on us. That’s why he has done so much in his career and been so disciplined.”
