Jose Mourinho delivered a typically cutting comeback in response to Mesut Ozil’s jibe that he’d rather retire than play for Tottenham.

The Arsenal midfielder, who has been exiled by the Gunners but maintains club loyalties in north London, but the Spurs boss put him in his place.

When told about Ozil’s remarks at a press conference, Mourinho hit back, saying: ‘Who told him that Tottenham were interested in signing him?’

Ozil has been sidelined in the red half of north London for months now and was not included by Mikel Arteta in his team’s Premier League or Europa League squads.

The 32-year-old is under contract until June and earns a massive £350,000-a-week at the Emirates, with the club desperate to get him off the books.

When asked in a Twitter Q&A whether he’d rather retire or play for Spurs, he responded: ‘Easy question. Retire!’

Given that Ozil has not taken to the pitch for approaching a year now, Mourinho had an easy put down at his disposal in response.

Mesut Ozil is still earning £350,000-a-week despite not being picked for Arsenal

The fact that Arsenal are down in 11th in the Premier League table but their neighbours are flying high in fourth means the war of words is not likely to be won by the German playmaker.
